Vivid Images - Paintings and Drawings by Andrew Pettitt

Beginnings

Andrew was born in south London in 1966 but has lived all his life in and around Norwich in Norfolk.

He has a wide range of interests that are reflected in the varied subjects he includes in his paintings.

Andrew is self taught, taking up drawing some time after leaving full time education.

Wherry

He initially produced detailed pencil drawings (like the Wherry, left) partly as a creative outlet but also as a means of decorating his own home.

As a result of a gift of a drawing to a friend, Stella Archer, Andrew was invited to show his work for the first time in a two week ‘one man’ exhibition of pencil drawings at the National Maritime Museum of Ireland in Dun Laoghaire in 1993 (below).

This was successful, resulting in a number of sales.

Encouraged by the success of this Andrew started working in colour, initially continuing using blendable colour pencils but developing quickly to painting with Acrylics on canvas board.

On seeing one of Andrew's early paintings (Oxnead Mill, below), a friend recommended that he submit work to a contemporary arts project for assessment for a series of exhibitions.

Oxnead Mill

This resulted in a three-week taster show and a two-week exhibition at Wrentham in Suffolk in 1998 (below). This again resulted in several sales.

More Recent Work

Art has always been a hobby for Andrew, painting for pleasure but also producing a number of commissions for friends who have admired his work.

In 2009 he was able to dedicate more time to painting, exhibiting a number of his works at Picturecraft in Holt.

Andrew also started working with oil paints, which have had the effect of softening his style a little (see Brancaster Beach).

In February 2010, Andrew held a one man exhibition of his work at the Assembly House in Norwich and at this time was featured in a major local interest article in the Eastern Daily Press.
